Bring your notebooks and writing utensils, and be ready open yourself creatively.
This is a workshop for writers of all styles and experience levels.
ALL ARE WELCOME & NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY.
Next Workshop: Tuesday, October 17th at 8:00pm at the Eclectic Theater, 5312 Laurel Cyn. Blvd. North Hollywood 91607
So, what is this group anyway?
Vanessa Cate leads the group in a variety of writing exercises. The aim is to start from your truth, use writing in a therapeutic way, build character, play with language, and feel free and empowered in your craft.
The evening ends with a brief guided meditation and the opportunity to share any work you feel comfortable with.
The group will start promptly at 8:00pm, so arrive a little early to get comfortable and enjoy some refreshments. The workshop will go for approximately 2 hours. Afterwards, you are welcome to stay for snacks and drink (feel free to bring some too if you’d like – potluck style).
$ Donations will be accepted (Pay what/if you can) – All proceeds past materials help support True Focus Theater.
RSVP at firstname.lastname@example.org so we can plan on your coming! Or just show up. 🙂

“The True Focus Creative Workshop is a fantastic experience… Ms. Cate’s enthusiasm for the art form inspires others. Her experience with different subject matter enables her to guide students through different parts of the writing process. Her positive reinforcement method encourages students of all levels to challenge themselves in a safe environment.”
— Christopher Jones, ESL Instructor 22 Years with the Los Angeles Unified School District
“As a leader of writers, Vanessa is intelligent and organized, thoughtful and patient, encouraging and creative. She keeps the focus on the learner, makes it safe for even the shyest new writer to share, and playfully challenged even the most experienced professional.”
— Mark Hein, PhD, Emeritus professor and Artistic Director of Actaeon Players
“I have attended at least a dozen meetings of True Focus Theater’s Creative Writing Group. That fact should tell you how much I get out of them. Vanessa Cate uses guided writing exercises similar to those in the Playwriting Class I took at the University of West Florida where I got my degree. Only hers prove more intense, because we do a series of them, each in some way connected to the others. Sprinkled with practical advice here and there, the group meetings have helped me in subtle but profound ways – teaching how to find not the analytical side of writing (which I can handle myself a lot of the time) but finding/developing/getting to know the intuitive something out of which my art comes.”
— David MacDowell Blue, playwright & theatre reviewer (Night-Tinted Glasses)
“I got talked into popping my fictional cherry at a creative writing group led by Vanessa Cate. During each session, Vanessa does everything she can (just shy of having us drop acid) to guide the group’s brains toward thinking a little differently — inspirational music ranging from Jimmy Durante to Björk, guided meditations, scented candles, motivational affirmations. …Vanessa’s prompts are what make the difference, always encouraging you to come at your writing from a different angle. She’s been a big part of making me love fiction — and thanks in big part to this group, I’m now working on a YA novel, a film script, and a play.”
